Common Questions

Both contain semaglutide — the same active ingredient — at different doses. Ozempic (max 2mg) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy (max 2.4mg) is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Insurance coverage differs significantly between the two. Many providers prescribe Ozempic off-label for weight loss at a lower cost.
Ozempic's retail list price is approximately $935/month. GoodRx barely moves it. The Novo Nordisk NovoCare savings card can bring costs down to $25/month for commercially insured patients. Uninsured patients may qualify for the patient assistance program at $99/month based on income. Telehealth programs that bundle medication typically run $149–$299/month. Use our Cost Calculator for your specific situation.
Coverage varies widely. Many commercial plans cover GLP-1s for diabetes (Ozempic, Mounjaro) but exclude them for weight loss alone. Wegovy and Zepbound face more restrictions — some plans require prior authorization, step therapy (trying other medications first), or specific BMI/comorbidity documentation. Medicare generally doesn't cover GLP-1s for weight loss, with a recent exception for Zepbound for sleep apnea.
The STEP-1 trial showed an average of 14.9% body weight loss with Wegovy at 68 weeks. The SURMOUNT-1 trial showed 20.9% average with tirzepatide 15mg (Mounjaro/Zepbound) at 72 weeks. That's roughly 37 lbs vs 52 lbs for a 250 lb person. Individual results range widely — some patients lose 5%, others over 25%.
